Oxidation and How We Fix It

Restores Original Color

If left untreated, oxidation can lead to "pitting" in metal or permanent staining on vinyl. Removing it now preserves the integrity of your home's factory finish.

Oxygen-Safe Solutions

We replace harsh, stripping chemicals with professional-grade surfactants that lift oxidation safely without damaging your landscaping or the environment.

No "Tiger Striping"

Improper pressure on oxidized surfaces creates permanent run marks. We use high-volume, low-pressure rinsing and light agitation to ensure a uniform, streak-free shine.

What is Oxidation?

At its simplest, oxidation is a chemical process that occurs when a material is exposed to oxygen and environmental factors like UV radiation (sunlight) and moisture.

When it comes to your home, this isn’t “rust” in the traditional sense, but rather a breakdown of the factory-applied finish or the material itself. This creates a chalky, dull, or faded appearance on the surface. If you’ve ever touched your siding and come away with a white, powdery residue on your hand, you’ve encountered oxidation.

Common Materials Susceptible to Oxidation

Not every surface reacts the same way to the elements. The most common materials that suffer from this chalky buildup include:

  • Vinyl Siding: The most frequent culprit. The PVC begins to degrade under intense UV exposure.

  • Aluminum Siding: Often develops a heavy white powder that can actually pit the metal if left untreated.

  • Painted Metal Surfaces: This includes gutters, downspouts, and metal garage doors.

  • Fiber Cement (Hardie Board): While durable, the factory paint or stain can oxidize over time, leading to a dull, “blotchy” look.

How to Tell if Your Home Has Oxidation

Before scheduling a soft wash, you can perform a quick “Finger Test” to diagnose the issue:

  1. The Finger Test: Run your dry finger across a dry section of your siding. If a chalky, pigment-colored powder transfers to your skin, the surface is oxidized.

  2. The Luster Test: Look at your siding from an angle during a sunny day. If the side of the house that gets the most sun looks significantly duller or “flatter” than the shaded side, oxidation is the cause.

  3. The “Ghosting” Effect: If you remove a shutter or a wall-mounted decoration and the color underneath is vibrant while the rest of the wall is faded, the exposed area has oxidized.

Why Standard Soft Washing Isn’t Enough

A standard soft wash is designed to kill organic growth (mold, mildew, algae) using a specialized cleaning solution. However, oxidation is not alive. Standard soaps and sodium hypochlorite (bleach) will remove the dirt and algae, but they will not remove the chalky oxidation layer. In some cases, a standard wash can even make oxidation look worse by leaving “run marks” where the cleaner moved through the chalky residue.

How Blue Heron Fixes the Problem

Restoring an oxidized home requires a specialized Restoration Wash, not just a standard cleaning. Here is how Blue Heron handles it:

  • Specialized Cleansers: We use professional-grade surfactants specifically formulated to break the static bond of the oxidized chalk.

  • Agitation: Unlike a standard soft wash which is “spray and rinse,” oxidation removal often requires light, manual agitation with soft-bristled brushes to lift the degraded layer.

  • Precision Rinsing: We use high-volume, low-pressure rinsing to ensure all the chalky residue is completely flushed away, revealing the original color underneath.

  • Uniform Finish: Our process ensures a streak-free, even finish that restores the “curb appeal” and luster of your siding.
